Abraham Daniel GROGG

Born in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, Abraham Grogg, at a very young age, traveled with his family to settle in Plain Township, Stark County, Ohio in about 1810.  Growing up, his family was always just scraping by as meager farmers.  In 1833, he married Anna Bowers, daughter of Mathias Bowers and worked around at odd jobs for a year before saving enough to buy land in Liberty Township, Crawford County, Ohio in 1834.  He and his brother John each purchased parcels of land on the same day—September 2, 1834—Abraham buying 80 acres. He again bought another 40 acres in 1835.    He was also said to have purchased 120 acres in Chatfield.  He toiled relentlessly to clear the land and build a homestead for his family.  Through the years due to his hard work, he became one of the most successful and respected farmers in Liberty Township.  When each of the five children who survived into adulthood married, he gave them each a significant parcel of land for a wedding gift.  The wealth he amassed by his own hands is evident in his will, which is a many-paged tome.  He and his wife were members of the United Brethren Church, which was the congregation at Liberty Chapel at that time.  His grave stands just behind the Chapel in what is refered to as the Crall Cemetery.

Obituary of Abraham Grogg

Abraham Grogg died at his home in Liberty Township of heart disease on Friday April 22, 1887. The deceased was born in Dauphin County, PA on October 1808 and was the second son of Solomon and Mary (Snyder) Grogg. When the deceased was but one year old his parents came to Ohio settling near Canton, Stark County. His parents being in limited circumstances Abraham worked on the farm until he married in November 1833 Miss Ann Bowers. After the marriage he worked for himself, and carefully saving the little money that could be saved in those days, he came to Crawford County purchasing 120 acres in Chattfield Township and 30 acres in Liberty. These Properties has to be cleared and tilled. He also earned some of his living by having a mechanical knack for making anything from clothing to farm implements. He was steady and industrious and added to as well as improved his property and raised a family of conscientious citizens. As they came to manhood and womanhood each were in turn provided for with broad rich acres in Sandusky and Liberty Township, in all amounting to in cash or land to upward of $20,000. Of eleven children but five survive: Daniel, Amos, Sarah (Mrs. Geo. Ambrosier) Frances (Mrs. DO Crum) and Jemima (Mrs. Samuel Sturz). All the children were present at the funeral excepting Sarah Ambrosier of Binggold County, Iowa. The deceased was confined to his bed for three weeks and was tenderly cared for by his faithful wife and children. The funeral service was held on Sunday in Liberty Chapel.

Abraham Grogg was among the first trustees of the United Brethren Church (Liberty Chapel), built on land purchased from Henry and Julian Crall on the corner of Davis Rd. and a side road in Liberty twp. This church became the center of the religious life and to some extent the social life of the Crall and Crum families.
