Mary Toothaker was accused of witchcraft in 1692 during the Salem witch hysteria. On 28 May, Mary, her 9 year-old daughter, Margaret, her sister, Martha Carrier (Allen) of Andover, and Elizabeth (Jackson) Howe of Ipswich Farms (a cousin-in-law) were arrested for witchcraft. Testimony was given that she had attempted to persuade two women to touch the devil's book on threat of death. Mary confessed and stated she thought the Devil had inhabited her body and prevented her from prayer. In her confession on July 30 of that year, she claimed she saw the devil "in the shape of a Tawny man." The devil, she claimed, promised to keep her safe from Indians, of whom she was quite afraid. It appears that after her confession she was released (The logic of the day seemed to be that if one confessed, then they had broken the hold of the devil, but if they refused to confess, then they were still within his power). Ironically, two days after the examination the Indians attacked Billerica, burning the vacant Toothaker house. At the end of January 1693 she and her family were freed and went back home to the burned out house. Mary Toothaker went on helping sick people. Three years later, on Aug 5, 1695, she was killed when Native Americans raided the Toothaker farm in Billerica. Her daughter, Margaret, was captured by the Indians and never seen again.

Christian was the first of three of that name. Christian, being one of the older children of Mathias may have been born in Switzerland. It is not known when he moved to Lower Paxton twp, Dauphin Co. but he was on a list of inhabitants there in 1770. He may have also served in Capt. Whitley's Co. of the Paxtang Volunteers in 1779, but the repetition of names in the various Crall families makes positive identification almost impossible.
The land on which he and his family lived was willed to him, Mathias stating that Christian had given full satisfaction. He willed part of his land to his son, Henry; the remainder was to be sold, a sum of £200 to be put on interest for his widow and the rest of the proceeds was to be divided equally amoung his six children or their heirs.
