William FRENCH

• BIRTH: ABT. 1605, Essex, England 
• DEATH: 20 NOV 1681, Billerica, MA

William French was born in England, perhaps 15 March 1603, at Halstead, Essex, although this has not been proven.  According to custom house documents, he was born in Essex Co. in 1605.

William French migrated on the ship "Defense" which sailed from London 10 July 1635. He is listed on the passenger list as servant to Roger Harlakenden. He eventually settled at Cambridge where he was a tailor. He a proprietor of Cambridge1635-36. He was confirmed as a lieutenant 26 May 1647. He removed to Billerica, MA. in about 1652. At Billerica, he was an original proprietor and settler and first deputy or representative from Billerica to the general Court of Massachusetts at Boston, 1663-1666. He was the author of a famous tract called "Strength out of Weakness."
