Ruth CARTER
Father: Jonathan P. CARTER Ruth Carter is connected to Jonathan P. Carter strictly on census information. Namely, that she is living in close proximity to all the Carters and that her birthplace is listed as “Boe, NH” in the 1860 census. She was born about 1806 and moved with her family to Carthage, Maine sometime before 1830. She married David Searles (see Searles Family) 02 December 1824 and bore him 7 children before his death in 1849. She is listed as living in #4 Plantation with her children, next door to Hiram Carter in 1850. Her son, James Searles b. abt 1839 is listed as being born in Mendon, Vermont on the census. The same holds true for her daughter Susanna, so it must be concluded that she and her husband lived for a time in Mendon. There is a David Searles listed in the 1840 Census of Mendon, Rutland County, VT. On the same page is a Jacob Welch, Jr. and the children of Ruth’s sister, Eunice are all listed as having been born in Vermont. So it must be concluded that they made the trip with the Welch family. By 1845 they had returned to Maine as their daughter, Theodosia, was born in Carthage. On 02 September 1853 she married widower Jacob Welsh. This Jacob is not the Jacob Welch who married Eunice Carter. Rather this is a neighbor of Gardner Searles, Ruth’s brother-in-law, who lived in Wilton. When they married, Jacob moved to Perkins Plantation among the Carters. Ruth Welsh died in 1878 and is buried beside her first husband in Intervale Cemetery in Wilton, Franklin County, Maine. Her second husband in his later years lived with Ruth’s son David C. Searles, as perhaps did Ruth. He did not pass away until 1896. Family 1 : David SEARLES![]()
