Tradition maintains that Josiph Boobyar was born in the Channel Islands about 1645. Some sources claim he was of Huguenot origin, but no firm evidence of this has been found. In her Bubier Family Notes, Madeleine M. Bubier speculates he arrived in Marblehead, Essex, Massachusetts between 1660 and 1665. He was certainly a resident of that town by 1668 when his name appears on a Petition against Imposts presented by the Inhabitants of Marblehead to the “Honoured Generall Courts” in Boston. It is evident from this petition that Josiph Boobyar, as he signs, was quite literate as his signature is carefully written in his own hand. He married Mary Joan Codner (See Codner Family), who was ten years his junior, as early as 1674. They left three surviving children of record in Marblehead and were members of the First Congregational Church. His first wife died before 1696, as he then married Rebecca (Greene/Pinson) Bartlett in that year. He died about 22 September 1701 in Marblehead.
