John MURRAY

Little is known of John Murray. According to the marriage and death records of his children, he was born in Scotland. By 1870 he was living with his wife, Catherine McPherson, in New Brunswick Canada, where their children were born. Their son Daniel's death record in the State of Maine Archives gives his birth place as Kingston, New Brunswick in 1870. No Scottish record of marriage has been found for John Murray and it might be possible that he was married in Canada. He is listed as deceased on his son's marriage certificate of 1898. Catherine is listed as living in West Sullivan, Maine at that time. The family probably immigrated into Maine about 1883; however, to date, no evidence of John Murray has been found in Maine and it is possible that he died in Canada..  Unfortunately there are no records of crossings from Canada into Maine during that time period.  Catherine was re-married in Ellsworth, Maine in 1884 to George Orr.

David Bixby SEARLES

David Bixby Searles was born in Nottingham West, Hillsborough, New Hampshire in 1779.  He is the only known child of Thomas Searles.  In 1801, he married Susannah Kidder.  She was likely already pregnant at their marriage as their first child was born less than eight months after their marriage.  Shortly after the marriage, they removed to the Wilton area of Maine where their son, David, was born in October of 1801.  He is first enumerated, as David Sarles, at Township No. 4, Oxford, Maine in 1820.  By 1830, he is listed in Wilton, Franklin County.  Throughout his life, he is listed as a farmer.  By 1850, he and his wife were living in Wilton with their son, Abner.  His wife, Susannah, died in 1852.  He is again enumerated with son Abner in 1860 and it is assumed he continued to live with his son’s family until his death in 1867.  He is buried with his wife and many of his children in Intervale Cemetery, Wilton, Maine.
