Father: Roger TOOTHAKERRoger, like his father, was considered a physician. He apparently had trouble with his family responsibilities as Billerica Records show that on 12 March 1682/3 at a Selectmen Meeting Toothaker was spoken to about "many things amiss in his family;" he asked for patience and promised to do better. By 15 December 1684, he had left town and the Selectmen were obliged to provide aid to his family, as well as to bound out two of his children (unnamed). During the Salem Witch Trials, he testified in court against his sister-in-law, Martha Carrier (Allen), in May 1692, he stated he had concluded that two children "were under an Evil hand" and that his own daughter had killed a witch and a witness collaborated the story. On 18 May 1692, the keeper of the Boston jail was ordered to take into custody Roger Toothaker and others all accused of witchcraft on the bodies of several women of Salem Village. He was accused by Elizabeth Hubbard, Ann Putnam, Jr., and Mary Walcot. Elizabeth Hubbard was the 17 year-old servant of Dr. William Griggs of Andover, a rival doctor. Dr. Griggs was a witchcraft conspirator, he used his 17 year-old servant to accuse many of witchcraft. On 28 May, Mary Toothaker, her 9 year-old daughter Margaret, Martha Carrier (Allen), sister of Roger's wife, Mary, of Andover, and Elizabeth (Jackson) Howe of Ipswich Farms (a cousin in law) were arrested for witchcraft. Roger died 16 June 1692, in Boston Prison, probably after being tortured. There is not a record of torture, it was most likely covered up as 24 men of a Coroner's Jury inspected the body to confirm he died of natural causes.
