Mrs. Barbara Layer ages 61, of Liberty Township, died at the home of her daughter Mrs. Ed Crum, near Sulphur Springs where she had been visiting for the past two weeks. Mrs.Layer had been in her usual health until Sunday evening when she was taken suddenly ill with a stroke of apoplexy, death resulting Thursday evening at 8 o'clock.
Mrs. Barbara [ Eppley ] Layer was the widow of Daniel Layer who passed away 26 years ago. She was born in Württemberg, Germany in February 1859.
She came to this country with her parents at the age of two years and has since been a resident of Crawford County. She was a faithful member of the German Lutheran Church and was a lady highly respected by all who knew her.
besides the daughter at whose home she died, two other daughters, Mrs. Lydia Knappenberger and Mrs. Mary Heiby survive.
Funeral services from the home in Liberty Township near Brokensward, Monday morning at 9 o'clock followed by service at the Shealy Church and burial in the Yeiter cemetary.EXCERPTS FROM AN EPPLEY HISTORY BY JOHN ELVIN EPPLEY , a nephew of Barbara Layer.
Barbara Eppley married an older man when she was 18, after a few years she was widowed. Her brother Jacob married and moved to and worked Barbara's farm; remaining there until Barbara's daughter Mary married.
Barbara was a jolly person; quite a favorite with her nephews. She never came to visit with out bringing a treat for the kids. Her favorite was sweet coated anise seeds which she referred to as "Mice Drek".
Barbara was probably the catalyst who held the family together. She promoted Sunday visits and mutual help and this eventully developed into an informal family reunion.MEMORIES FROM ALICE CRUM HARROP OF HER GRANDMA LAYER.
Alice was 9 years old when her grandmother died. Being the typical 9 year old her first thought was "no more nice presents". Grandma Layer always celebrated holidays by giving wonderful gifts. Alice, nearly ninety, still has several items that her grandmother gave to her.

Born in Stark County, Ohio, Daniel Grogg was one of the early settlers of Union Township, Dekalb County, Indiana. He worked his father’s farm and received a common-school education. In 1843, he married Elizabeth Hultz/Holts (possibly the daughter of John Hotlz of Plain Twp), and his first three children were born in Ohio before he moved his family to Indiana in May of 1849. He settled on a wild tract of 120 acres, out of which he cut a successful farm and to which he added until he owned 380 acres.
