John CRUM

John was a farmer in Lower Paxton twp, and met a horrible death when his home was burned down over him, probably in 1856. His grand-nephew, Crayton Crum (1875-1951), wrote the story of the fire:

After the death of his wide, John lived alone on his farm until the age of 60. In the winder of 1855 at 2am, a suitor of a helping maid in the home of Frederick Crum discovered the home of John Crum on fire. He awakened Frederick Crum who with other members of the family hurried to his Uncle's home. The weather was very cold and the snow deep, no other neighbors noticed the fire until near daybreak. It was generally supposed he was murdered and robbed of his money and the house set on fire. The body was consumed with the house. When the neighbors gathered they could plainly see the body lying on the floor but could not get it out of the flames. After the fire, relatives and friends shoveled the debris out of the cellar and found part of the bones and less than $100 in gold. While the fire was burning foot tracks of two men were seen in the snow. That same morning two men were seen walking several miles away. Later one of them was arrested on suspicion as he was wearing an overcoat and shoes identified as belonging to John Crum, but at the trial he was acquitted by an alibi sworn to by his witness that he was at the witnesses house during the evening of the tragedy. The jury claimed that no one could travel that distance and commit the crime and get away until the time the fire was discovered. The identity of the criminal remained an unsolved mystery until 1894, just before the death of the mother of Joe Nestler who was the son-in-law of John Crum. Mrs. Nestler told that it was her son, Joe, who murdered John Crum.
