Father: Erlon K. MURRAYWayne Daniel Murray was born at home in Jay, Maine, on 28 November 1939. He was premature, the pregnancy being only in the seventh month. He weighed 3 pounds. The doctor attending the emergency declared the child stillborn, wrapped the body in a blanket and put it on the back in the November cold and attended to the mother. The family's regular physician arrived shortly thereafter, examined the baby and revived him. He was placed on the oven door surrounded by water bottles to keep him warm. He was known to the Grimaldi family as "Butch" or "Butchie" and many family members did not know his given name. He and his brother, Gary, attended two different Catholic boarding schools as children, Andover and Mt. St. Charles. At the age of 14 he moved to New Jersey to live with his father and step-mother. He quit school at the age of 17 and joined the Marine Corps (USMC # 1630405). While serving as a Marines he met Claire Louise Harrop when they became pen pals. They were married 12 March 1960 in Bucyrus, Ohio. After the marriage he returned to his base in North Carolina and Claire followed when housing for the newlyweds became available. They lived on the base until he was given an honorable discharge in December of 1960. Then they moved back to Bucyrus and rented a little brown house at 208 Penn Avenue. All three Murray children were born while they resided at this address. In May of 1966 he returned to Maine, followed shortly by his family. In Maine he worked at several professions, but most notably was a welder for Bath Iron Work. Later he was self-employed as a welder and art-smith. On 10 February 1986 he was killed suddenly while cutting trees for firewood. The vibration of his chainsaw shook down a nearby dead tree (known in the logging industry as a “widowmaker”), which struck him in the head. After he was hit, he rose and walked several feet before falling dead. He was given no funeral by his immediate family. He was cremated and his ashes are buried in Lewiston, ME.
