John was the probable father of Walter who was named on a list of tenants of the manor of Felsham dated 9 October 1404

Bixby is a place name which derives from the name of some long forgotten Viking settlement. It literally means Boxwood-farm, Byx/Bix/Bex/Box meaning that kind of tree, and -by being the Viking word for farm. Just where the original Bixby was is not known. One can presume that John was not the first to bear it as an hereditary surname, but he, and then Walter, must have been sole survivors of the name at that time, for all subsequent Bixbys seem to have descended from them.
