John GROGG

• BIRTH: ABT. 16 FEB 1806, Pennsylvania
• DEATH: 10 MAR 1879
• OCCUPATION:  Farmer

John Grogg was purportedly born in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania around 16 February 1806.  This date is calculated from his tombstone, which stands in Sherwood Cemetery of Delaware Township, Defiance County, Ohio, giving his age at death as 73 years and 23 days.  About 1810 he traveled with his family to Stark County, Ohio where he grew to manhood.  At this time, it is not known if he ever married in Stark County before removing to Crawford County where he is recorded to have purchased land in 1834 in Liberty Township along with his brother Abraham; however, an early marriage somewhere is certain for on the 1850 federal census of Delaware Township in Defiance County, Ohio there are children listed who could not have come from his 1847 marriage to Eve McConagh.    Also on the 1840 federal Census, he is listed in Liberty with a household consisting of  2 males under 5, 1 male 5-10 years, 1 male 30-40 years, 2 females 5-10 years and 1 female 30-40 years.  Eve brought to their marriage 3 McConaha children: Rachel, Sarah and Elverta.  It is not yet known what Eve’s maiden name was.  It is my theory that John Grogg was married shortly after 1830 as he is counted with his brother Abraham as being in his father’s household on the federal census of that year—2 males of twenty and under thirty.  On every federal census with occupation information, John Grogg is listed as a farmer.  He died 10 March 1879.  It is not yet known if his wife, Eve, survived him.
