Family 1: John MURRAY
The earliest record of Catherine McPherson found is the notice of her marriage (as Catherine Murray) to George William Orr in Ellsworth, Maine on 08 October 1884. However, we know that she emigrated from New Brunswick, Canada some time before then, as she is listed as a parent on the marriage record of her son Daniel J. Murray, who was born in New Brunswick. We know she was first married to John Murray in Canada from this same marriage record and the death records of her children. The 1900 Federal Census gives her place of birth as Canada, with her parents being Scottish. On Daniel’s marriage record and all other records, she is listed as born in Scotland. No Scottish records have been found for her. She is confirmed as the mother of both Albert Murray and Daniel Orr on their WWI draft registrations. Neither her birth date nor that of her son, William, is certain as she would have been 9 years old at the time of his birth—hardly likely. It is possible that she could have been 14 at the time of her son Daniel’s birth, though even that is suspect. According to her son, Daniel Orr’s birth date, she was pregnant at the time of her second marriage. The 1900 Federal Census lists her as having 6 children so the children found are a complete list. George Orr was born 17 April 1854 in Albert County, New Brunswick, Canada and died 20 May 1925 in North Sullivan, Hancock County, Maine. According to the 1920 Federal Census, Orr was employed as a pavin cutter. The couple is buried in Blaisdell Cemetery in Sullivan along with four of her six children. Catherine’s cause of death was carcinoma of the colon.
Family 2: George William ORR
