Francis INGALLS

Came to Salem, Massachusetts from Lincolnshire England with his brother Edmund in 1628 in Gov. Endicott's company.  He and his brother were the first known white settlers at Lynn, Massachusetts in 1629.  At some point, he removed to Swampscott where he built a tannery and was the very likely the first tanner in Massachusetts.  His tannery was located on Humfrey's brook, where it is crossed by a stone bridge in Burrill street.  The vats were still in existence until 1825 when they were removed.  He remained in Swampscott until at least 1640 when he moved to Boston.  His will is dated 1672 and mentions his wife, Mary.  he was overseer or his brother, Edmund's will in 1648.
