Father: Christian CRALL IIIBuried in Crall graveyard (Liberty Chapel) row 16
With a family of thirteen, nine of which grew up, and the hired help necessary to keep a farm going in those days, there were always many around the table. As was the custom, anyone traveling through at mealtime stopped in for a meal. It soon came to be known that Molly Crum set a good table, and she had more than her share of the peddlers that went through the country. These peddlers were a boon to country dwellers, with their wagons full of the necessities of daily living, everything from tin pans to shoe laces to fabrics and tools. A trip to Bucyrus, seven miles away, took all day with a horse and wagon, and was not to be undertaken lightly. Perhaps the children got to Bucyrus twice a year, but certainly not much oftener. Sulpher Springs, only a few miles away, is now only a crossroads, but in those days it had several stores and places of business.
A woman's work was never done on the farm and Molly often toiled from 5AM to 2AM to keep up with her work. Hired hands for the fields were always available but household help was not. Many times Molly kept one or more of the girls home from school to help her with work. And many times laundry or similar tasks kept the girls busy after supper. All food was grown, preserved, and prepared at home and all clothing except men's suits, even underwear had to be made at home. At that, life had become somewhat easier for this generation, Spinning and weaving was not done at home. Molly remembered when back in PA, a peddler had come through with the first cook stoves. If he met resistance to purchase, he left one on trial for a period of time. needless to say, most of them stayed in the homes as women did not want to go back to cooking in the fireplace. nevertheless, it was still a hard life, both for the men and women.
After her husbands death in 1912, Molly was in failing health and had no desire to live longer. She died at the home of her daughter Ellen.
