Father: James HARROPMost of what we know of Hugh Harrop comes from the Centennial Biographical History of Bucyrus, Ohio known as "The Hopley History." He was born in Ashton, Lancashire, England 27 March 1832. Early in his life he trained as a machinist in England. Then in 1857 he emmigrated to America, landing in New York City. From there he went to Philadelphia and for a short time worked as a machinist. Then it seems he went to Niagra Falls, New York where he stayed until 1 January 1860, when he made his way to Crestline, Ohio. There he began working in the shops of the Pennsylvania Railroad and was soon promoted to foreman. He worked in this position until his death on 9 September 1889. On 19 December 1861 he married Catherine Adelaine Cover. Their income must have been comfortable as according to the 1870 census Hugh and Adelaine had a 16 year old domestic named Rosa Finnigan living in their home. He was active in the Methodist Episcipal church and the Masons, as well as being a stanch republican. He is buried with his parents in Greenlawn Cemetery in Crestline.
The Obituary of Hugh Harrop, 10 March 1889:
" Hugh Harrop, an old and much respected citizen of Crestline died suddenly at his home yesterday morning. He was a machinist and foreman of one of the Pennsylvania shops. He was the father of George Harrop formerly of this city."
